How Many Times Have You Opened Instagram and Seen “Impressions”… and Thought, “What Am I Supposed to Do With These Numbers?”

What do they even mean?

If you’re a data ninja and already know the answer—hold on a sec! We still recommend reading this post (or at least skimming through), because there might just be a few golden nuggets in here for you too.

So, let’s clear things up.

What Are Impressions?

Starting from the basics: impressions measure how many times your story, post or beloved reels have been seen.

I know what you’re about to ask—“But what if someone watches my story more than once?”

Every single time they view it, it counts as a new impression

Ok… But What’s the Point of These Impressions?

Actually, they’re super important—this is the metric that tells you how well your content grabs attention and stops the endless scroll of your viewers.

If your goal is to build a community, this is a metric you should highlight and keep an eye on regularly.

Now, if you’ve been on Instagram for a while, I bet another question has popped into your head:

“What about reach? What’s the difference?”

Impressions vs. Reach

Reach tells you how many unique people saw your content.

So, if one person watches your stories 10 times, your reach is still just 1.

If you’ve got lots of impressions but low reach, it means people are really enjoying your content and coming back to it.

If your reach is high, it means you’re reaching new users—great for growth.

What’s a Good Number of Impressions?

There’s no universal answer, no magic number—because it depends

On what?

If you’ve just launched your Instagram profile and you get 500 impressions, that’s a great start! It means you’re doing something right.

But if we’re talking about an account with thousands of followers, we’d expect much higher numbers

What really matters is the ratio between impressions and reach

If impressions are 2–3x your reach, it’s a great sign—your content is really capturing attention.

How to View and Analyse Impressions on Instagram

So, where do you find these “impressions” on your Instagram page?

Let’s walk through it—if your phone’s nearby, open up Instagram and go to your profile.

  1. Tap “Professional Dashboard”
  1. Tap “Insights”

🔍 Quick tip: If you’re reading this and using a personal profile, you won’t find Insights. They’re only available for business or creator accounts

If you’re using Instagram for work, check that your account is set to business or creator

Don’t worry—it’s free and you can always switch back later.

Where to Find the Stats?

  • Posts: Tap “View Insights” under each post to see impressions, where they came from, and how many interactions you’ve received.
  • Stories: Swipe up while viewing your story—you’ll see impressions, responses, and engagement.
  • Reels: Tap the three dots (…) and select “View Insights” to see all the performance data.

Now That You Know About Impressions… What Other Metrics Should You Track?

Reach

Yes, we’ve already touched on this—but it’s worth repeating. Reach tells you how many unique users have seen your content. If your impressions are high but reach is low, you’re mainly reaching the same people.

That could mean strong loyalty—but if you want to grow, you’ll need to broaden your audience.

Engagement Rate

One of the most important metrics.

Your engagement rate measures how much people interact with your content (likes, comments, shares, saves) compared to how many users were reached.

It shows quality and relevance

If you get loads of impressions but no interaction… maybe something didn’t click.

Clicks and Interactions

Instagram also lets you track:

  • Link clicks in bio
  • Tag taps on posts
  • Replies and swipe-ups in stories
  • Profile visits

These actions show intent—the user didn’t just passively view, they chose to engage or dig deeper.

That’s pure gold, especially if your goal is to drive conversions.

Last But Not Least… Are There Any Tools That Can Help?

Beyond what Instagram gives you directly, here are some external tools to help you track impressions and more:

  • Meta Business Suite – free, and perfect for managing ads too
  • Later – great for scheduling and analysing performance
  • Hootsuite – handy for managing multiple platforms
  • Iconosquare – loved by agencies and social media managers for detailed reporting
  • Not Just Analytics – super intuitive, great for freelancers and creators

Why Are These Tools Useful?

Because they help you read and understand your data more clearly, spot what’s working, identify what can be improved—and let go of what’s not bringing results.
